Great Mosque

A. Overview. Masjid Agung Palembang is one of the relics of the Sultanate of Palembang. This mosque founded by Sultan Mahmud Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I or Badaruddin Jaya Wikramo starting in 1738 until 1748. It is said that this mosque is the largest mosque in the archipelago at the time. When I first built this mosque has a spacious 1080 square meters with a capacity of 1200 pilgrims. The first expansion is done by endowments from Sayid Umar ibn Muhammad Assegaf Altoha and Sayyid Ahmad bin Syech Sahab Nataagama under the leadership of Prince Raden Ibn Mustafa Karta Mangala Kamaluddin. In 1819 and 1821, improvements made ​​by the Dutch government.







After repairs done and then do the addition / expansion in 1893, 1916, 1950s, 1970s, and most recently in the 1990s. At the time of expansion in the years 1966-1969 by the Foundation of the Great Mosque, the construction done by building the second floor of the mosque became so extensive 5520 m2 with a capacity of 7750 people. On the renovation and construction of the 1970's by Pertamina, also performed the construction of the tower with the shape it is today. The original tower with Chinese-style roof is maintained.

Masjid Agung Palembang has a distinctive architecture that is pyramid-shaped roof that shades the Chinese by the end of the roof curved upwards. The architect of this mosque are the Europeans, and some building materials such as marble and glass imported from Europe.
